Video is the technology of recording sequential still images that represent scenes in motion. Video often implies recording audio as well. Video technology provides a medium of communication. With this medium we can communicate almost any idea, often times more quickly and more accurately.
How does video work?
Basically, video cameras capture and record still images in rapid succession. These images are called frames. Video cameras, or camcorders, will capture about 30 frames every second. When these are played back a phenomenon known as "persistence of vision" allows us to see the images as one continuous moving image. This can be coupled with audio to provide a greater sense of fluid motion. In the example below, you see an animated horse. It is actually just 8 separate images played in rapid succession over and over again. The horse appears to run because of persistence of vision. (more info: persistence of vision)

Video Communication
We are influenced by video all of our lives.
Video communication is an art that delivers information and evokes emotions. Video programs range from television dramas to video surveillance to advertisements and even home movies. Video is ever present in our world and even if you never produce video, you are affected by it. Video communication is widespread and very effective. It is the most pervasive and powerful means of communication ever invented. If a picture is worth a thousand words, what is a moving picture with audio worth?
The psychological impact of visual communication cannot be underestimated. It is as much a form of communication as spoken language or the written word. Our eyes and mind are constantly watching and interpreting images. Even our dreams include images. With this in mind it is important to understand visual language.
Visual Language
Video communication is a language all it's own, just like a written language. Instead of words to evoke ideas it uses images and sound. Instead of grammar to construct sentences it uses shots that build scenes. These scenes can be used to much like the paragraphs written in prose. Just as use build paragraphs into chapters and novels, you can build scenes into sequences and programs. Most video programs start out with a written script and with the understanding of a visual language they are translated into video. This translation is not an exact word for image translation, but instead it is the visual depiction of the same ideas that are built out of the written language. The following is an example of how a sequence is built out of written words:
